They make things like viral campaigns and peer-to-peer fundraising easy as they're built natively into [their platform](https://socialgood.fb.com/). *Work from anywhere in the world.* These are the best [**remote nonprofit jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs). With Facebook donations, people don't need to leave the app to become a donor of your organization. Which also means it's much easier to invite friends and see your campaign ideas spread across their personal networks. And there are some manual ways around the lack of donor information collected. Like tracking names and Facebook accounts that gave and reaching out to their personal accounts. But there's currently nothing that integrates seamlessly with a donor management system for Facebook donations. That's why this needs to be about growth and spreadability. The more people you can reach, and get involved, the more you can find other ways to engage with them. Then you can collect their information, so you can nurture them through your whole donor journey. Facebook donations are a great way to accelerate this process. Getting fully set up with a verified Facebook donations account **can take several weeks, but there are ways to expedite the process**. There's also a difference between receiving *donations through Facebook* and becoming verified through [Facebook payments](https://pay.facebook.com/). The short answer is **no**. Just because you've received funds doesn't mean you're actually verified to accept Facebook's direct fundraising tools. Facebook acts as a middleman for money raised for nonprofits that are verified outside of Facebook. For instance, organizations with accounts set up through the Network for Good or Guidestar. These funds are often raised from people on their birthday or on their own who otherwise want to support you. You may have already collected funds this way, and found that it took a really long time to see it hit your account. That's because Facebook doesn't process them. They need to be sent off to these partners for as long as 6 months, before you'll ever see them. Crazy right? You don't have months to wait for donations that you need now. There's a solution for you. Becoming verified through Facebook payments means you'll receive these funds in your account just weeks after they've been collected. This is because FB uses the same payment processing system as they do for verified retailers. Now, they've made it free for nonprofits like you to use. Without doing anything, you may have already qualified for the slow, unverified donations. What you want is to get set up as a verified payment recipient. And this may take some time. So let's get you started *quickly*! To get verified for Facebook donations, *you'll need*: Now that you know *what you need* to get started, **let's break down each of these steps.** If you've already [created a page](https://www.facebook.com/help/104002523024878) for your organization, you'll want to make sure it's categorized as a nonprofit.  This can actually be a hard thing to miss, especially if the page was set up a long time ago by someone else. Instead, it may have been set up with default settings as a business, idea or public figure. It doesn't need to be the only category. You can have multiple, but "nonprofit organization" needs to be at least one of them. If you've skipped this step, your organization won't appear as an option to verify on the [sign-up page](https://www.facebook.com/donate/signup). If so, swoop back to your "About" section and just make sure this new category saved properly. There are certainly things you can do while you're starting to collect these documents and information, like submitting your page for approval to Facebook's [Community Standards](https://www.facebook.com/communitystandards/). But you won't be able to complete everything until you have the information listed above in hand. Some of the information you just need to know or have written down. But take note that your recent bank statement and sometimes a verified tax document will be needed **in PDF form** to complete this. When you arrive at this sign-up page for your verified Facebook donation account, you should see the icon for your nonprofit's Facebook page (shown in the photo below as "Slave Free Market").  If you don't see it, go back and make sure you've changed the category of your page in [**step 1**](#step1-nonprofit-category). To the right of your nonprofit's profile picture, **click the arrow** and your next steps will unfold, as shown in the picture above. Submitting your page for review to meet community standards, creating your Facebook payments account and checking on your status of approval can all be done here. You should bookmark this page in your browser. You'll return to it often. Even if you're still waiting for some paperwork to come in you'll want to submit your page for Facebook's Community Standards review. Then, Facebook's 24hr review team will be on the job to manually review your page. They could have thousands of requests like this to get through, so submitting now will help you get ahead. Though, I've usually seen this take anywhere from a few days to just over a week. No further actions are required at this time. Let's submit the final forms for you to become a Facebook verified nonprofit! If you've made it this far, and have the info and pdfs in hand, let's walk through what these forms look like. Most of these fields are straight forward. But one section you may want to think of in advance is your category, as you can only choose one. I've listed them below for you. One quick note that “bank account” is the only account type you can choose. And on the last checkbox, here are the [Terms of Use](https://www.facebook.com/legal/donation_button_terms) you're agreeing to, in case you'd like to review them ahead of time. Once you've completed this, you're done! ? Just keep checking back on the [**sign-up page**](https://www.facebook.com/donate/signup) until you see the green checkmark that says you're approved. This confirms that your facebook donation account verification is complete Your call to action button on your page shows the main action you want people to take. "Message" will encourage them to send you a Facebook message. "Sign up" may lead them to your email list. "Donate Now" will lead them to a give form that you've linked to your site. But **"Donate" is different**. Remember, you don't need them to leave your Facebook page to give anymore. The donate button will let them give right to your Facebook donations account. In a Facebook post, email or planned campaign, ask your supporters to [create their own](https://www.facebook.com/fundraisers/) Facebook fundraiser for your cause. To make sure this option is available: It's best to set a goal for them, give them some suggested descriptions and even provide photos for them to post. The most successful campaigns will be those that share their own personal stories and connections to your organizations, but you want to make setting up the campaign as easy as possible. There are many people who simply won't when they're faced with the wall of what to say when sharing it. So they may just take what you suggest and share it verbatim. And that's ok, too. But however they choose to share it, what's important is that your world-changing organization is going to reach way more people than before. And because your account has been set up to receive Facebook donations, your cause and message can spread and receive new donors way easier. So let's get to work on you growing like never before! **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) - [The pros and cons of using Facebook donations](#wfyyjwesifsspvkftbziwqndgqzktlirftib_wfyyjwesifsspvkftbziwqndgqzktlirftib) - [How long will it take to get approved?](#ihyyxrhiahdmspsvspkmlpoyxkgcmtimvfln_ihyyxrhiahdmspsvspkmlpoyxkgcmtimvfln) - [Why does it take so long for Facebook to process my donations?](#ihyyxrhiahdmspsvspkmlpoyxkgcmtimvfln_ihyyxrhiahdmspsvspkmlpoyxkgcmtimvfln) - [Everything you need to get verified](#ajkcnsalxmryfffuniemqytzybykzairvpxq_ajkcnsalxmryfffuniemqytzybykzairvpxq) - [Actually creating your Facebook donation account](#facebooks-community-standards) - [Add a donate button to your Facebook page](#facebooks-community-standards) - Facebook donation button on your page and in your posts. - People can create their own fundraisers that encourage their friends to give. - Followers and influencers can add a donate button for your org to their page. - Facebook forms load 10X faster than landing pages, so you don't lose people while pages are loading. - Facebook provides necessary tax forms to donors. - You only receive someone's email address if they choose to provide it. - This will not integrate with your donor CRM, so you can't easily link these donations to their account. 1. This includes text-to-donate, peer-to-peer fundraising tools, event solutions and more.Organizations like [Malala Fund](https://malala.org/), [Girls Scouts](https://www.girlscouts.org/) and [1% for the planet](https://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/) trust them, as well. You know GoFundMe from supporting your friends personal fundraising campaigns for families in need, surgeries and other immediate needs. Well, gofundme has decided to start supporting charities as well, with their new [charity.GoFundMe.com](https://charity.gofundme.com/) platform. The tool includes fundraising pages, powerful campaign insights and even event registration. Organizations already using them include [American Cancer Society](https://charity.gofundme.com/americancancersociety), [American Heart Association](https://charity.gofundme.com/americanheart) and [The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)](https://charity.gofundme.com/llsusa). When it comes to keeping your team in sync, there are actually a ton of free options available. In fact they offer such great functionality, that you won't even notice you're on the free plan. When it comes to beating your chaotic email inbox, [**Slack**](https://slack.com/) is for sure the first tool that comes to mind. It functions as an instant messaging platform similar to iMessage on your Mac, but also contains links and integrations that make sharing files, tasks, or quick questions really simple. And their free plan will give you enough functionality, probably forever if you're cool with [a few limitations](https://slack.com/pricing). But, if you want an upgrade, they do have an upgrade [offer](https://get.slack.help/hc/en-us/articles/204368833-Slack-for-Nonprofits) for nonprofits, as well. When you're getting your team on one page, you need one centralized tool to see everyone's progress and work together. [**Asana**](http://asana.com/) is the perfect tool for that. And it integrates with everything! Tools like Slack, Spark, Zapier, etc. You can use it for personal use or a whole small team. Their free plans are available for [teams up to 15](https://asana.com/pricing). If you're looking for an easy tool for tracking staff time off, [Timetastic](https://timetastic.co.uk/discounts/) offers a discount for nonprofits. Possibly the best marketing software I've e ever purchased is [**Funnelytics.io**](https://www.funnelytics.io/?ref=cameronbartlett1). It gives you a visual view of all of your digital marketing strategies in one place. You can track sources, conversions and see what of your efforts are actually paying off. I first started using it with their [free campaign mapping tool](https://www.funnelytics.io/?ref=cameronbartlett1), something that your nonprofit can start using right now, to gain clarity by mapping out your campaigns. Scheduling social media posts can become such a hassle, and finding engaging content to fill your queue can be even worse. But tools like [**Buffer**](https://buffer.com/nonprofits) make it easy to source and schedule content across your channels. And they're especially friendly to nonprofits with their generous [50%](https://faq.buffer.com/article/240-publish-non-profit-discount) discount. I've been a big fan of buffer for years. And their team integrations on their business plans make collaboration and approval super easy. If you promote yourself or your org on Instagram, you get the stress of getting no likes on some of your posts and not having any clue why. So, my brother and I set out to fix this problem and found a really creative solution.  [**Savvant**](http://savvant.io/) is our tool that analyzes your Instagram posts and breaks down the creative to see why people are liking your posts. Is your caption too long? Are your hashtags off? Maybe square photos are better than wide. With Savvant, you can learn all of this. We're proud to say that Savvant was even featured on [Mashable](https://mashable.com/shopping/jan-11-instagram-tools-on-sale/), twice! One other tool, that needs to be mentioned here is the Instagram analytics tool, [**Minter.io**](https://minter.io/). Now, they don't publicly have a nonprofit plan per se, but... the team there is super accommodating. I reached out to them on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/minter_io) and asked if they offered nonprofit discounts or would let me trial it for longer, and I was able to get full access to it for over a year, just by asking. It's definitely worth a look-into. When promoting your nonprofit, church or cause, one of the best ways to get found without spending a penny is to show up in search results. When people are looking for ethically-sourced goods, and your [fairtrade chocolate](https://www.goodcocoa.co/) pops up, you're bringing qualified people to your site at no cost. Well, there is a big cost when it comes to finding the right content marketing tool. Software like MOZPro, [SEMrush](https://www.semrush.com/) or Ahrefs can be cost-prohibitively expensive. Now, they each do offer free versions of their plan and free trials. [Ahref](https://ahrefs.com/) even offers up to 30% for nonprofits, if you talk with a salesperson. But, MOZ offers, without any haggling, a [75%](https://moz.com/help/your-account/manage-subscriptions/non-profit-discounts) discount for all nonprofits! Which is one of the best nonprofit discounts I've found. **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) --- ## URL: https://www.cambartlett.com/best-nonprofit-websites ### Title: Best Nonprofit Websites ### Page ID: 7318200 ### Content: # How to Optimize Your Nonprofit Website for Donations ## **What you'll read in this article** ## The best nonprofit website examples ### Charity: Water ##### What's good about CharityWater.org ###### Shows clear impact ###### Clarifies the problem ###### Builds trust ###### Forecasts a longterm goal ##### Ways to Improve ###### Add lead-capture step to homepage ###### Text is too small to read in some text blocks ###### Add main CTA to the bottom of the page ###### Too many footer links distract from the main CTA ### Malala Fund ##### What's good about Malala.org ###### Forecasts a longterm goal ###### Elegant, interactive design ###### Donation form above the fold ###### Lead-capture on the homepage ##### Ways to Improve ###### Needs to more clearly define the problem ###### Main action steps are unclear ###### More focused on we than "you", donor language ### National Aquarium ##### What's good about Aqua.org ###### Engaging video background ###### Important information is available at top ###### Options of actions available above the fold ##### Ways to Improve ###### Too many action options ###### Doesn't tell a cohesive story ###### Clarify a first step for new potential supporters ### International Justice Mission ##### What's good about IJM.org ###### Reveals problem, solution and plan ###### Invites donors with clear actions ###### Adapted compelling COVID-19 messaging ##### Ways to Improve ###### Add transitional call to action ###### Email opt-in campaign and followup ###### Create dynamic retargeting ad campaign ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) ## **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) [cameron bartlett — award-winning 🏅 digital marketing leader for global movements](cambartlett.com) Right now, more than ever, you need to make sure your nonprofit website is ready for your new digital fundraising campaigns. This, along with election and politics ads require steps to confirm your identity, verify your organization and make your ads available through the Facebook ad [library](https://www.facebook.com/ads/library). The personal verification stage is simple, but could take several weeks to complete. You'll change personal login settings, confirm your address via mail and use a photo id to verify your identity. Each person that you want to run ads on your account will need to complete this process, as well. You'll need to set up a way to authenticate your account in at least two secure ways. You'll have the option to **confirm your phone number** and verify through the **security settings in your Facebook mobile app**. Facebook will use their own security location tracking and your personal address to confirm your location. You'll need to submit an official form of identification for Facebook to verify it's you. Once your personal account and information are confirmed, it's time to move on to the steps inside your Facebook Business Manager account. You'll next need to create a disclaimer that will show at the top of your ads. This gives viewers of your ad more transparency into who paid for and is running the ad campaign. If you need to find the authorizations settings again, here's how to access it. You have the option to display a disclaimer in one of four ways. And you'll need different documentation to set up each option. Next, you'll link this disclaimer to your ad account, so you can launch ad campaigns about politics, elections and social issues. Lastly, assign someone as a page owner. This will become public information through Facebook's ad library transparency policy. **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) - [**Step 1: Personal verification**](#step1-personal-verification) - \- [Two-factor authentication](#Two-factor authentication) - \- [Verify your address](#Verify your address) - \- [Confirm your identity](#Confirm your identity) - \- [Once you are verified](#xoiapiszboleqsewghdevcxbuspzeowbyfkl_xoiapiszboleqsewghdevcxbuspzeowbyfkl) - [**Step 2: Create a disclaimer**](#step2-create-a-disclaimer) - \- [Access your Business Manager account](#business manager account authorizations) - \- [Choose your disclaimer](#choose your disclaimer) - \- [Link it to your ad account](#Link it to your ad account) - \- [Assign a public page owner](#Assign a public page owner) - [Set up two-factor authentication](#Two-factor authentication) - [Verify your address](#Verify your address) - [Confirm your identity](#Confirm your identity) - [Once you are verified](#xoiapiszboleqsewghdevcxbuspzeowbyfkl_xoiapiszboleqsewghdevcxbuspzeowbyfkl) - Choose your country - Enter your address (Facebook will mail you a letter with a code) - Confirm the code you receive in the mail on Facebook - Facebook will also use your location through the app to verify your location - Select your organization's page from the dropdown menu - This will bring you to your page's authorization settings - Click "**Go to business manager**" to access your business manager account settings - [Go to your business manager account](#business manager account authorizations) - [Choose your disclaimer](#choose your disclaimer) - [Link it to your ad account](#Link it to your ad account) - [Assign a public page owner](#Assign a public page owner) - Go to [business.facebook.com](business.facebook.com) and select your **business manager account** - Select your **organizations's page** through your business manager - At the top-right, click **settings** - Scroll down to the **authorizations tab** on the left - *If you don't have a business manager account,* you'll need to [**create one**](https://business.facebook.com/overview) - Tax-registered - Other - Provide self-declared information --- ## URL: https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs ### Title: Remote Nonprofit Jobs You'll Love ### Page ID: 7318202 ### Content: # Build a career in doing good — remote nonprofit jobs ## Non profit jobs by type ## Food, Water and Home-building charity jobs ??? ## Tech for good jobs ??‍? ## Human rights nonprofit careers ❤️ ## Child advocacy careers ?? ?? ?? ## Education and Medical jobs **??‍? ??‍⚕️** ## Planet / Animals + Ethical goods ? ? ## Wellness and Mental Health ??‍♂️ ? ✨ ## Agencies that support charities ? ## Nonprofit software company roles ? ## Social impact / nonprofit job boards ✅ ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) ## **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) [cameron bartlett — award-winning 🏅 digital marketing leader for global movements](cambartlett.com) You want to build a good career for yourself. More than $6M of this difference can be attributed to the social media strategy. We raised this money through developing clear messaging, compelling storytelling, exponentially increasing our awareness and engagement and tying it all into an integrated donor journey. At the end 2016, IJM introduced a new form of slavery we’re fighting called cybersex trafficking. We needed to find a way to raise awareness and support, while understanding the sensitivity and restrictions of posting this on social media. This became the largest social media campaign IJM had ever run.  It reached more than 11M impressions and raised over **$4.8M to end cybersex trafficking.** In my first few months working with IJM, we endured an unprecedented tragedy. Our colleagues Willie, Joseph and client Josephat were murdered in the field. In response to this global crisis and incredible injustice, we created a communication plan and led the most viral social media campaign in IJM’s history. This campaign reached over 7,000,000 people. #JusticeinKenya had more than 110,000 engagements and trended internationally for a week. We worked with influencers with a combined following of over 100M people. We garnered 40,000 signatures for justice. And the men responsible for murdering Willie, Joseph and Josephat were convicted and sentenced. Virtual Fundraising Campaign with 6,000 YouTube, TikTok and Twitch Creators In the Fall of 2021, New Story teamed up with the viral virtual fundraising campaign Thankmas with a goal to raise millions of dollars to build homes for families in need. We partnered with over 6,000 Youtube, Twitch and TikTok creators and influencers. The campaign reached millions of people and **raised over $7.5M to build new homes.** In 2021, New Story started a brand new TikTok account and quickly started to grow. We later hired a brilliant social media manager. And together we created content, built a strategy and started to gain tens of thousands of followers.. Our content quickly began to reach hundreds of thousands of people. And in 6 months, we created a viral post that **reached over 5.2M people.** During my time at Precision for Medicine, we created complex Hubspot content automations and highly-targeted sales prospected campaigns that allowed to 3X our YOY revenue at Precision for Medicine from $2,200,000 in 2021 to $7,500,000 when I joined in 2022 and to increase our lead to customer ratio by 4X, in the first 6 months alone. During my time leading the digital team at The Exodus Road, we created a digital journey that guided people to become visitors, followers, leads, donors and ambassadors for our cause.  We increased our sessions by 168%, our leads by 392%, and new donors by 139%. This also resulted in a 49% increase in recurring donors and a **77% increase in total revenue**. Seedbed Publishing came to me with a problem. They needed to quickly increase their revenue to become sustainably self-funded. What they needed was an integrated digital marketing strategy to increase their value per customer and donor.  I created an integrated welcome sequence to build long-term relationships with their supporters that offered products and ways to engage with the organization. This included brand messaging, email series and automation, dynamic creative social media ads and a unified customer journey map.  **After just 12 months** of working together, we were able to **increase Seedbed’s yearly revenue from $750,000 to nearly $1.5M.** **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) --- ## URL: https://www.cambartlett.com/seo ### Title: 23 Nonprofit SEO Strategies to Help Donors Find You on Google ### Page ID: 7318210 ### Content: # 23 Nonprofit SEO Strategies to Help Donors Find You on Google ## Create a Compelling Content Strategy ### Your website’s core keyword phrase ### Finding related keywords ### Topic groups for your keywords ### Get creative if you don’t have a lot of search traffic ## Writing Articles That Rank in Google ## When writing articles that you want to rank #1 in Google for your nonprofit, you’re writing for two things: people and robots. ## You’re writing first for people because the goal of any search engine is to give people a good experience. It needs to be readable and enjoyable and make it easy for them to find what they’re looking for. It won’t matter how many Google rules you follow if you don’t first write in a way that will engage your readers. ## Next — the robots, or rather the rules that search engines use to determine if your content is high quality and will be the best to answer people’s questions. ## Let’s start with where you can get inspiration. ### Study what the top articles do ### Strategically use keywords throughout  ### Internal linking ### External linking ## Submit Your Sitemap ### What is a sitemap and how do you find it? ### How to submit your charity’s website sitemap ### Recrawl your website when you create new content ## Optimizing Content for SEO ### Start with the content that’s already ranking ### Compare to the top articles ### Update your content so it’s current and accurate ### Rid your website of extra pages  ## Every page should have an action ## So how does this fit into your digital donor journey? A strong SEO strategy serves often as a first interaction with your organization.  ## Though there will certainly be people who are familiar with your organization coming in through Google, it will mostly be people who have not yet given or even heard of your cause.  ## That’s why every page should have one clear call to action and a potential secondary action to capture those who are not ready to give.  ## Your goal should be to get people to either opt-in to receive your emails, learn more through a video or other content or to simply give to support your nonprofit.  ## When you pitch a donation, it should be as related to the content on the page as possible. If they just read about the power of giving a goat to a family in need, that should be your main call to action, not some other need or project.  ## For those who aren’t ready to give, you want to find a way to continue your relationship with them. Whenever possible, offer something related for free in exchange for their contact information. That way you can follow up with them.  ## If they’re just not ready for any of that, you could offer the ability for them to engage further with a video or more content that will further answer their questions. This will at least deepen your brand's impact on them.  ## And regardless of what steps they take, retarget people who come to your website with Google or social media ads to create more opportunities for them to get to know you or give in the future.  ## Let's Make Your Fundraising *Way* *Easier* 🎉 ### Claim your guide to becoming a digital fundraising expert. But could a nonprofit SEO strategy actually make a difference in your fundraising? I remember when the check came in that we had all been waiting for, addressed from a high-status and brand-new donor. The amount printed inside the envelope that we all read — $250,000.  But how did they even find our small nonprofit, we asked. “I searched for human trafficking charities in the area and you were the first to come up. That’s where I started my research.”  A simple Google search and our nonprofit’s SEO strategy had earned a quarter of a million dollars to support our cause. This was one of hundreds of donors of various sizes who gave because they found us through Google first.  And with the right SEO strategy, you can do the same for your organization’s search results and fundraising goals. Here’s how to get started. / here's a popular article: [remote nonprofit jobs you'll love](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) ❤️ You want to start by determining what your website as a whole should rank for. What’s the simplest version of what your website offers to users? It should be a combination of what content you share / plan to share and what your ideal donor would be searching for that can be answered on your site. Now, this term can be broader than the specific pages on your website will be. For example, International Rescue Committee's core keyword may be their name or the broad topic of the refugee crisis around the world, whereas their page about their work in the US ranks #1 for the term “refugees in America.” You also don’t want it to be too broad. For example, Charity: Water wants to rank for more than just the term “water” because this will be competing with every water company as well as searches for water bottles, bodies of water, etc. Instead, they want to rank for phrases like “clean water charity.” So, your homepage will rank for your branded keyword (your nonprofit’s name), and a key phrase that either describes the problem you address, your solution or your unique insight. Next, you want to find all the related topics people are searching for around your core keyword phrase. To start, you could simply search your keyword phrase in Google and see what comes up. When you start typing “education nonprofit,” what does Google autofill in the search bar? You may see “education nonprofits in Nashville” or “education nonprofit jobs.” What other results come up when you search “global homelessness”? You might see articles about global homelessness statistics or how to solve homelessness. From there, you can use other tools like [Google Keyword Planner](https://ads.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/) (you will need a [Google Ad account](https://ads.google.com/) to access this free tool). You can also use a tool called [Answer the Public](https://answerthepublic.com/) to formulate questions people may be asking about your topic. And there are also a number of SEO tools you can use — some even offer [nonprofit discounts on their software](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-software). These tools will allow you to find related keywords, phrases and questions people are asking. And you can even sort them by which words are being searched most frequently and how hard they are to rank for. What you want to do next is group these terms together into articles and pages you’ll create.  You may want a whole page called “Facts about \[the problem you solve\].” And this can contain any questions people have that can be answered with key facts, ratios, infographics and more. If you have a unique approach to addressing your problem, you could have a page that’s all about your solution and the many questions people are asking about it. When people ask the same question in a slightly different way, you can combine them into one article. When people use a variation of the same keyword, you can add them both to the same page. If the keywords related to your nonprofit are not terms that people are often searching, you can get creative with your content. Start to think about what your ideal donor would be searching for, even if that’s not you or your branded keywords. Your ideal donor may be looking for volunteer opportunities, corporate social impact programs and other ways to give back to their community. It may be more broad, though. If your donors are parents, could you create content that’s family focused? If they are often business professionals, you could create something tailored to their industry that will draw them to your site. Then you can talk about how companies in their sector match donations. At New Story, a nonprofit innovating to end homelessness, we found that not a lot of people were searching keywords around “global homelessness.” So, we focused on a couple of things.  First, they were searching for one of our solutions: 3D printing homes. So we leaned into that on our website and ranked well for it.  But when it came to the problem of homelessness, we did something pretty interesting. We wrote about other problems that people were searching about and showed them how building a home affects these things.  We wrote about how building a home protects people from human trafficking, provides clean water and business opportunities and keeps families together. And now generous people who cared about all kinds of causes were coming to our website.  When trying to rank for a keyword phrase, search that term and find the top articles that come up for this topic. Then, study them. Try to understand why these articles ranked in the top 10 results for this topic. Look at the format. Was it image-heavy, started with a strong video, short and text-based, or a media-rich long-form article? Examine the headers and subsections to see what content they related to this one blog post or landing page.   Find areas that you could follow or replicate in your article. And find ways to optimize your post so it’s better.  Does their page load slowly? Optimize your images and other areas of the page so your content loads quickly.  Does it take a while for them to give a clear answer? Create an index at the top of your article that internally links to specific article sections, written with clear answers so that Google might even use them as snippets.  Once you’ve written your compelling article for people, it’s time to do something for Google. You want to find ways to naturally integrate your article’s keyword and variations of it throughout your page. This should be included early on in the title, your meta description, in your first paragraphs and paragraphs throughout. Your headers should feature it a few times. It even comes down to how you name your image and video files. As well as what’s called an alt tag on your images.  You don’t want to overstuff these keywords anywhere. In fact, Google really doesn’t like that. Instead, it should feel natural. Name an image what’s actually in the image and, wherever possible, use the keyword.  Use the keyword and variations of it 4-6 times throughout the article. Remember, it doesn’t have to be the exact phrase. Switch it up to account for the different ways people will be searching it.   This way you can capture people searching for both short-tail keywords (the shorter, simpler versions of your keywords) and long-tail keywords (the longer variations of keywords that make things more specific). For example, “water charities” is the short-tail keyword and “water charities in the US” is the long-tail keyword. One way to tell Google and users which content should rank for what terms is to link between your different pages and articles. In fact, your pages need links from other pages to tell Google they even exist. And with the right strategy, this will tell search engines specifically what those pages should rank for. Remember, you don’t want every page to rank for everything. Or any page to rank for everything, for that matter.  You want each page to rank for its specific keyword or set of keywords. You’ll want to keep track of which pages you want to rank for each of these. And then you want to find where that can naturally fit.  In fact, I’ve already done that in this article. When I was talking about SEO tools to use for your nonprofit, I mentioned that some tools “offer [nonprofit discounts on their software.](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-software)” And I link just like this because then you’ll read the article and see that the tool MOZ offers a 70% discount for nonprofits on their tool.  Now, one thing that’s really important is what text you choose to hyperlink. This is called your anchor text. This anchor text tells Google what phrase should be associated with that page.  So, you wouldn’t want to hyperlink using the text "click here" or "follow this link" because it gives no context for what this page is to search engines. Instead, you want to use your keyword or a natural variation. For example, I linked on the phrase “nonprofit discounts on their software” because the phrase I’m trying to rank for is “nonprofit software deals.” And this was the most natural variation of that.  I’ve also realized as time has gone on that this article ranks for the specific tools I list. So, I could have linked above where I said, “[MOZ offers a nonprofit discount](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-software)” because this will help it rank for search terms that have naturally developed from this article.  At times, you can even add it in as almost an advertisement that links to your other articles. For example, I could say: *If you like learning about SEO and nonprofit marketing, here are* [*22 nonprofit marketing conferences you should attend in 2022*](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences)*.*  I like to italicize these, or you could bold them, so they stand out and people can see that they’re promoting something and are separate from the article.  You’ll want to start with articles that are already ranking so that you’re linking to your best stuff. This will help both your existing article and the new one you’re writing to gain credibility with people and the robots that scan your site.  Internal linking makes a lot of sense to people; it’s just linking to your own content so people can see more of it. With external linking, you're linking this article to outside sources, even at times competitors. Why would you want to do that? With both people and search engines, external linking gives your articles credibility. It can be a key ranking factor with the robots. And people will trust you more because they know you’re the source they can rely on to bring them the best information, even if it’s not yours. It can be as simple as citing your sources for a statistic or an idea. For New Story’s articles about the water crisis, we went as far as linking to other great nonprofits in the water space.  I get it, going that far may not feel comfortable for you. But as you write an article, clearly you’re going to research it. Where did you get your information? Even if you don’t link from your paragraphs, you could include a section of sources at the bottom that you link to.  When I added links to other great lists of nonprofit conferences to my article about them (yeah, even the ones that ranked above me), it helped move my article up to the second position in search results.  Now, something you want to avoid here is linking out with the keyword you’re trying to rank for. This is where you can get creative again. For example, if I want this article to rank for “nonprofit SEO strategy” and there’s another source that’s similarly titled, I won’t link using the name of the title. Let’s say SEMRush wrote the article; I would hyperlink their name instead.  It would look like this: “SEO strategy for nonprofits by **SEMRush.**” This way, my page isn’t telling Google that I think another page is better at answering that phrase, just that they also have something valuable to add to this discussion.  This way you can freely share other valuable resources with your audience.  Your sitemap is a map that tells Google how to navigate your website. It’s built by your internal links. That’s why you want to make sure you’re linking between pages. And submitting this to Google and Bing will help your website have a better chance of showing up in search results.  Most web tools will create these for you. And finding it is often as simple as going to yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml. You’ll want to look up how your platform creates these by searching for your web platform and sitemap. For example, “How do I find my WordPress sitemap?” Or you could reach out to your development team. There may be multiple sitemaps based on how your website is set up. For example, your donations, shop and blog pages are built out separately. You’ll want to get all of your sitemaps for this next step.  It’s actually quite simple. You’ll want to create an account on [Google Search Console](https://search.google.com/search-console/). You’ll need to verify your domain and then submit your sitemap or multiple within the platform.  To do the same for Bing, you’ll then want to create an account with [Bing Webmaster Tools](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/about) and follow the same steps. Because you will have already set up your Google account, Bing allows you to connect your accounts and it saves you time on the verification step.  Once you set up your sitemap with Google and Bing, they’ll periodically rescan your website to see new pages and how your existing content fairs. But this could take weeks or months in between. So when you publish new content or make major updates to pages on your website, you should resubmit them to the search engines for review.  You’ll simply take the url of the new or updated page and have these sitemap tools recrawl your content. I did this when I updated my article about 2021 conferences to 2022 conferences and I’ll do it when I publish this article, as well.  This ensures your content is as up to date as possible with Google and Bing.  When optimizing content, you want to start with the pages that are already ranking. Moving into or within the top 10 results will make the most valuable difference for your content’s search traffic. This is because people’s search behaviors have changed. Most people no longer scroll to page 2 or 3 of the search results to find what they’re looking for. They’re most likely to simply search something slightly different if it’s not in the first few results.  An overwhelming majority of people click on the first result on the search page. This is the first organic result that falls right under the sponsored ads. From there, the second result receives about half as many results. And it continues to drop at a similar rate throughout the remaining top 10 search results.  Getting on that first page is key. And moving smaller numbers up makes the biggest difference. For example, moving something that ranks #2 to the top spot will gain you double the search traffic every month.  So, your goals are to optimize content that ranks #1 so that it’s up to date and stays in the first position. Then work on your #2 rankings and get them to #1. Anything that’s top 10, work to move it into the top 4. And anything in the top 20, work on getting them to the top 10. Anything beyond that should be saved for last, if at all.  Similar to when you’re writing new content, you can start optimizing content by seeing what the top results are doing well, and what you can do even better. Some of those things will be out of your control. Those websites may have a much higher domain authority and strong backlinks from reputable sources. But, there’s a lot you can control.  Similar to when we covered this when writing new articles, you can look at their format, media and keywords included. What sites are they linking to? You could add them as a source in your own article, so that you benefit from some of their domain authority.  Optimize your articles and pages to be a better version of the best parts of the top-ranking article. Keep it up to date and you’ll have a chance to claim that top-ranking spot.  One of the best ways to keep people coming back, and Google happy, is to keep your content updated. The simplest example of this is how every year, marketers end their year by updating their blogs about things in this year with what’s coming next year.  For example, I updated my blog that had nonprofit marketing conferences in 2021 to those in 2022. And you’ll want to do that every year.  More practically, you want to use this same idea with all of your content. If you’re talking about something in the future, and that time has come, adjust your content to talk about it in the past.  Have current events or strategies changed how you talk about your programs or how you show your expertise on a subject matter? Update your articles and pages to reflect that. Nobody wants to come to a source they trust, you, and find that your information is outdated or inaccurate.  The same goes for links. As you link both internally to your website and externally to others, you want to make sure you’re sending people to the right place. Has that page's url changed or has it been taken down altogether? Well, you may be sending people to a 404 error page and neither your visitors nor Google likes that.  You can use free tools like the [Atmos](https://error404.atomseo.com/) broken link checker to scan your pages and see if anything is broken.  Keeping your links and content up to date will help you stand out and impress both potential donors and the robots.  Depending on how old your website is or how much you’ve published, you may have a lot of old pages that no one visits anymore. These are called zombie pages. And they’re hurting your chances of ranking.  Google and Bing want to recommend not just articles but reputable websites to people. Your domain authority is a combination of a number of factors including which websites backlink to you, how long people stay on your site and how valuable your pages are collectively to users.  10 high-performing pages will beat out websites with dozens or hundreds of zombie pages any day. Now, you don’t need to get down to 10, but if you have 100 pages (80 of which haven't had a visitor in years), then you have some work to do.  Here are your options. You could simply unpublish pages that aren’t getting any traffic and are underperforming. This will ensure you have fewer but better pages on your website.  You could combine pages that have similar, competing content. This will allow you to have one page that’s super rich with content related to that topic. As long as it’s not too overwhelming, this may serve as a better option to answer your readers’ questions and give them a better experience.  As you unpublish and combine pages, you’ll want to make sure to set up redirects to any pages that have had visitors. For example, if you combine two articles together, the first url should now send people to the new article.  Finding ways to create new content, optimize existing articles and combine or remove underperforming pages will show Google and your potential donors that you’re worth their time and interest.  **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) - [Create a Compelling Content Strategy](#Create%20a%20Compelling%20Content%20Strategy) - [Writing Articles That Rank in Google](#Writing%20Articles%20That%20Rank%20in%20Google) - [How To Submit Your Sitemap](#How%20To%20Submit%20Your%20Sitemap%20) - [Optimizing Your Content and Website for SEO](#Optimizing%20Your%20Content%20and%20Website%20for%20SEO) - [Every Page Should Have an Action](#Every%20page%20should%20have%20an%20action) - [SEMRush](https://www.semrush.com/blog/seo-for-nonprofits/) - [whole whale](https://www.wholewhale.com/tips/best-seo-tips-nonprofits-10-minutes/) - [elevation web](https://www.elevationweb.org/seo-for-nonprofits/) - [nonprofit megaphone](https://nonprofitmegaphone.com/seo-nonprofit-exposure/) - [donorbox](https://donorbox.org/nonprofit-blog/seo-for-nonprofits/) - [virtuous](https://www.virtuous.org/blog/beginners-guide-local-seo-nonprofits/) --- ## URL: https://www.cambartlett.com/privacy ### Title: Privacy Policy ### Page ID: 7318211 ### Content: ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) ## **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) [cameron bartlett — award-winning 🏅 digital marketing leader for global movements](cambartlett.com) Welcome to Cambartlett.com. They build it on a platform called [Vercel](https://vercel.com/) and clearly spend time and intention making this a unique and immersive experience for donors. / *I also put together this list of the* [**best nonprofit conferences in 2024**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences)**.** Hope you to see you at one. ✌️ Just like everything Girls Who Code does, they get really creative their nonprofit's annual letter to donors. It's bright, colorful, onbrand with their code-empowering cause and just plain fun to read through. The Rainforest Alliance makes an impact in many socially-responsible ways. That's why they implement engaging elements like an interactive map where you can see their cause focus in different countries and more immersive sections to scroll through. The Innocence Project has a complicated story to tell through some really important numbers that equate to individual stories of the people they're serving. Their work is vital, urgent and thing like exoneration rates have a real impact, just as every individual story does. And their impact report reflects this in style, tone and the content they highlight throughout. The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) share's a great example of a social impact report that highlights stories from donors, shows who they're helping the change they're making. Preemptive Love takes a similar approach to the above examples in their 2022 impact report, with both top-bottom and side-scrolling features. But their elements are much simpler, making it much more approachable for you to replicate for your organization. They use a platform called [vev](https://www.vev.design/) to accomplish this report's design, and it works well for them. Malala Fund always prioritises their engaging and empowering brand that simply stands out among so many other causes. And that's carried through here in their impact report. It may be a PDF, but it's so intentionally-designed that you'll want to flip through it. It's a great example of how even if you can't code an interactive page, you can lean into your design skills to create something very readable and noteworthy. Charity: Water presents another great example of how you don't need all the bells and whistles for people to engage with your report, when you intentionally design. The highlight crisp photography, that leave space for stats, stories and clear messaging. And they feature stories of impact and longterm change. Starlight starts, as they always do, featuring stories of the kids their donors are supporting. The feature beautiful photos of happy kids and tell their stories throughout. They also show off their stats and things like where they work in some really creative and easy-to-consume ways. IJM has created similar impact reports for years that have worked really well for them. They spotlight stories, show impact over time, and even fun things like partnering with musicians and brands. One simple thing they do to stand out is turning a simple PDF into a virtual magazine. They use a tool called [issuu](https://issuu.com/), but feel free to make yours however you want. Whether [yearly](https://yearly.report/), [canva](https://www.canva.com/canva-for-nonprofits/) (who offers a [free nonprofit plan](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-software)), inDesign your own interactive webpage. The point is, make it unique and make it your own. **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**impact report**](https://www.cambartlett.com/impact-report) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) --- ## URL: https://www.cambartlett.com/guide ### Title: Your Fundraising Guide ### Page ID: 7318214 ### Content: # Build your career in doing good ❤️ # You'll get, **a 45-minute group Q&A session** to learn about building a remote social impact career. # Learn how to stand out. ✨ # Ask anything. ? # Leave ready to apply. ? ? # **Only $9!** *Normally $39.* # Simply select a date, to claim your deal. # Build your career in doing good ❤️ # You'll get, **a 45-minute group Q&A session** to learn about building a remote social impact career. # Learn how to stand out. ✨ # Ask anything. ? # Leave ready to apply. ? ? # **Only $9!** *Normally $39.* # Simply select a date, to claim your deal. ### A guide to free digital marketing and fundraising resources ### Digital Strategy ### Donor Journey  — TO BE CREATED ### Ads, Emails and Social Media Your Donors Will Love — TO BE CREATED ### How to Optimize Your Nonprofit Website for Donations  — TO BE FINISHED ### 23 Nonprofit SEO Strategies to Help Donors Find You on Google ### Top 10 Annual Impact Report Templates for Your Nonprofit ### Career ### Top 2024 Nonprofit Conferences You'll Love ### Build a career in doing good — remote nonprofit jobs ### Software ### The Best Nonprofit Software Deals for Your Team ## **Cameron Bartlett** ## digital marketer for nonprofits ## [bio](https://www.cambartlett.com/bio) • [portfolio highlights](https://cambartlett.com/highlights) ## **articles |** [**seo**](https://cambartlett.com/seo) **•** [**nonprofit conferences**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-conferences) **•** [**software**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-software) **•** [**remote jobs**](https://www.cambartlett.com/nonprofit-jobs) ## Let's Make Your Fundraising *Way* *Easier* 🎉 ### Claim your guide to becoming a digital fundraising expert.
